Tips for Growing Healthy Fingernails

Tips for Healthier Fingernails

tips for healthy nailsWhile it may seem like a minor detail to some, having strong, healthy finger nails is an important part of looking good. Not only do unhealthy nails look bad to others, they can also be an annoyance to you. Plus, healthy fingernails are a sign of a healthy person. These are all reasons why it’s important to keep your nails looking and feeling great.

If you want to stay healthy and look great, you need to adopt a healthy diet. Your fingernails are no different. Here are some small alterations you can make to make your diet more nail friendly. Cut back on how much alcohol, sugar, saturated fats, and dairy products you consume. To get adequate nutrients, you should consume a balanced diet with various, fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean meats, fish, nuts, beans, and Vitamin D fortified products. Not only will you have healthier nails, you’ll probably have a healthier body overall.

Poor fingernail health can be a sign of vitamin deficiency. If you’ve changed your diet and still aren’t seeing improvements, you may want to try a supplement. For healthy nails you need plenty of vitamins A, B, C, D, and E. You should also make sure you’re getting enough biotin, zinc and calcium. If you don’t want to take several supplements, you can try a daily multivitamin, or one specifically designed to promote healthy nails.

If you regularly bite or pick at your nails, polish may be the answer. Having polish on your nails will make you realize you’re biting them and help you stop. You can also find specialty polishes to strengthen nails or promote growth. Just be sure to take a break from polish every week to let your nails breathe.

Keeping your nails healthy also requires proper nail grooming to prevent breaking and other problems. Be sure to keep your nails trimmed short. If your nail breaks or is damaged, use and emery board and nail clippers to fix the issue. Avoid using metal files, your teeth, or your hands to fix the problem. You can always keep an or emery board in your purse for emergencies.

It is also important to keep your nail bed and cuticles healthy and well manicured. Rub moisturizer into your nails regularly. Look for moisturizers that contain urea, phospholipids, and lactic acid, or one deigned especially for softening cuticles. If cuticles cover the nail, simply soak them for 10 minutes and push them back with a tool. Don’t cut your cuticles.

If you use a hammer everyday, it loses its shine and just doesn’t look as nice. The same is true for your nails. If you use them to cut, open, or pick at things, you’ll make them weaker and less appealing. Remember, nails are there to look at, not to use.

Rarely, poor fingernail quality can be a sign of a serious problem. Several diseases can cause changes in nail texture, shape, and color. You should see a doctor if the remedies discussed above don’t improve your nail problems, if problems come on suddenly, or if you have other signs or symptoms of disease.

While you may not see improvement overnight, if you take these simple steps, you’ll have strong, healthy, beautiful nails in no time.

3 Easy Natural Home Beauty Remedies

January 31st, 2007 by MDD Admin

olive oil natural remediesWould you be surprised to learn that spending a small fortune on beauty products is quite unnecessary? All of the ingredients you’ll ever need are in your kitchen or pantry cabinet.
Here are three ways in which you can use natural home beauty remedies in a flash.

Olive Oil: You cook and bake with it; but did you know you can use it in a variety of other ways? Because olive oil is chemical free, it can be used on your skin; as a bath oil, moisturizer, massager, and conditioner. For example: You can apply a mixture of olive oil and lemon juice to your skin before bedtime to reduce wrinkles and, at the same time, moisturize your skin. To strengthen your nails, soak them in warm extra virgin olive oil for five minutes. Massage your sore muscles with a mixture of extra virgin olive oil and rosemary. Apply olive oil to dry hair as an overall conditioner.  It will leave your hair smooth and shiny.

Oatmeal: Wouldn’t you love a facial? Get out the box of oatmeal from your cabinet and begin. This oatmeal facial will not only exfoliate, but moisturize your skin as well.  Here are the steps: Take out a package of instant oatmeal; add a half a cup of water; two tablespoons yogurt; two tablespoons of honey and one egg white. Mix the water and oatmeal, then add the additional ingredients. Apply a thin layer to your face. Leave it on for about 15 minutes or until you feel tightness; then rinse your face with warm water.

Dry Skin Brushing: Here is a technique that will leave you feeling refreshed and rejuvenated. Before taking a shower in the morning, use a brush or sponge and begin the dry skin brushing process to exfoliate dead skin cells, and improve your blood circulation. Here’s how to do it: While standing the shower with the water off, start at your feet and begin brushing in small circles toward the upper part of your body.  Then work your way down the back of your body to complete the process. Do not scrub hard, but apply even and light pressure.  After you have completed this procedure, take a shower.

You don’t have to spend a lot of money to enhance your beauty.  All of the natural remedies are at home and within your grasp.

Great Foods for Great Skin

January 26th, 2007 by MDD Admin

great skins tipsEverything you put into your body will be reflected in your skin.  If you have a diet high in fat, processed foods and little fruit and vegetables your skin will surely reflect that.  In our teens, and 20s we’re able to get away with a lot but once we hit 30 and beyond our skin isn’t so forgiving anymore.

Here are a few must have foods to incorporate into your daily diet.

Green tea – Not only is this drink loaded with health benefits, it will also help the look of your skin by reducing inflammation and fighting free radicals that cause skin damage.  So drink up.

Water – You probably already know this one but we need approximately 8 glasses of clear water a day (no sodas, soups or other drinks are included in this quota).  For maximum benefits clear water is best.  It helps purify your body and eliminates toxins.

Selenium – This powerhouse nutrient is found in foods such as turkey, brazil nuts, tuna and whole grain breads.  Include at least one of these foods in your daily diet.

Fatty Acids – These are found in oils such as walnut and flaxseed.  Oily fish such as salmon, tuna and mackerel are also rich in essential fatty acids.

Dairy – Low fat dairy products are high in Vitamin A which is beneficial to the skin.  Low fat yogurt is also good for the digestive system which in turn helps skin health.

Fruits and Vegetables – A variety of fruits and vegetables are good for overall healthy skin but there are some foods in particular which are very high in powerful antioxidants and promote good skin health.  Berries, such as blueberries, strawberries and blackberries are great for fighting against free radicals which can cause skin cell damage.  Vegetables that are brightly colored such as red peppers, yellow peppers and sweet potatoes are also great skin foods.

Now that you know what to eat there are some things that should be left out altogether if you want to look young longer:

White Flour Foods – White bread, rice, pasta and sugar are less nutritious than the whole grain types and will cause inflammation in the skin which can lead to aging.  Try cutting these items from your diet for two weeks and look in the mirror.  Your skin should look less inflamed and fine lines will be less apparent.

Alcohol – dehydrates the skin and speeds the aging process, try to only have it in moderation.  A little red wine may have some health benefits whereas beer does not.

Smoking – This will age you, cutback or better yet cut it out altogether.  Your skin and lungs will thank you for it.

Processed Foods – Processed foods are loaded with sugar and additives, these wreck havoc on the skin and are best left out of your diet altogether.  Sodas and other sugary drinks are not only bad for your health but can also rob your skin of essential nutrients.  They’re also not good for your waistline and have been known to cause cellulite (even the diet variety).

For truly glowing, young skin a balanced diet rich in whole grains, fruits, vegetables and essential oils is best.

Review:  I didn’t like Intuition Plus the first time I tried it.  There was so MUCH soap on it I felt I needed to shave with my regular razor to get the hair.  But every other time I love it.  I don’t have to be in the tub or shower…a quick shave on DRY Skin!  I wet the Intuition Plus and shave!  It works great! I am lathered up and get a good shave.  I rinse off with a wet cloth and ready for the day!  Intuition leaves my legs feeling like I have washed, shaved and lotion them!  But yet it is not too much for my underarms.  I think that the reason I didn’t like Intuition at first is because there was TOO much soap to get a close shave.  I have the Intuition with razor & travel cap.  The cap sits nicely on the side of my tub.

Anti Aging Tips for Women

January 9th, 2007 by MDD Admin

anti aging tipsThroughout time, there’s been a persistent myth about the fountain of youth.  Sure, we all know there’s no spring in Florida that will keep us young forever, but we still chase after pills, crèmes and anything else that will magically make us feel younger or live longer.  Nothing can help us live forever or be ten years younger, but there are things you can do to help turn back the clock.

Stay on your diet.  You may be on a diet to lose weight, but it has other benefits too.  While carrying around extra pounds causes extra wear and tear on your system, a healthy diet also makes all your systems work right.  If your organs are properly nourished, they’ll operate more efficiently and won’t get worn out as fast.  It’s also a good idea to take a daily multivitamin.  You might find other supplements beneficial; just be sure you’re getting enough of the right nutrients and not too much of the wrong ones.

Don’t forget your skin.  An important part of feeling young is keeping your organs healthy.  Well, your skin is the largest organ of your body.  Having healthy skin can make you look younger, which in turn can make you feel younger.  In addition to using anti-aging skin care products, be sure to eat a diet that helps improve skin quality.  Good choices are fresh fruits and vegetables and foods rich in protein.  Keep your skin (and the rest of your body) hydrated by drinking plenty of water.

Get Exercise.  Everyone’s heard the old adage “if you don’t use it you lose it”.  Well, you’ve probably heard it so much because it’s true.  Regular exercise keeps your body working properly.  It can also strengthen your heart and help you lose excess pounds that are weighing you down.  And remember, exercising your mind is just as important for staying young as exercising your body.

Feel good about getting old.  It may seem silly, but people who have a positive view about getting older tend to live longer.  Instead of worrying about how hard it will be to get around or do normal things, concentrate on the fun of retirement or other benefits to getting older.

Sure, there’s no fountain of youth, but taking small steps to stay healthy and keep yourself going will go a long way in helping you feel younger and live longer.

Gloss Those Lips with Lip Gloss - 7 tips

January 8th, 2007 by MDD Admin

lip gloss tipsLip gloss is one of those little secrets to enhance your lips.  If used properly, a little lip gloss goes a long way. Accentuating the positive, lip gloss creates beautiful, moist, and youthful looking lips. It provides moisture to keep it chap free. Here are few tips on how to apply lip-gloss.

* Choose the correct lip-gloss depending on the color of your lips.
* Lip gloss adds a glossy effect to the lips.
* Lip gloss accentuates the lips, therefore if you have thick lips, use it sparingly.
* Applied over lipstick, lip gloss enhances the color.
* Apply lip gloss to the middle of the lower lips, and rub lips together for the gloss to spread evenly.
* Using the same method when applying lipstick, if you have applied too much, use a tissue between both the lips and smack them to remove the excess.
* There is a wide variety of lip gloss color you can choose from in place of, or in conjunction with lipsticks.

Here are some additional facts about lip gloss use.  If you dust your lips with powder, the color and gloss will last longer. Too much gloss, however, will dull the lips. For evening or special occasions, apply a sheer lip-gloss in silver, gold or an iridescent shade over the lip color.  Use olive oil, which contains Vitamin E, to give your lips a natural glow. Lip balm should also be applied before lipstick to keep your lips moisturized. It also prevents the lips from drying and developing cracks.

Regular lipsticks, used on a daily basis, will keep the lips moisturized.  However, when you add lip gloss in the evening, or on special occasions, your lips will be enhanced to achieve a more festive flair.
